- Lecture

The last day of the 2015 Bruges Triennial will close with a reading by Yoshiharu Tsukamoto, from the Japanese firm Atelier Bow-Wow. The architectural design firm is part of the selection of renowned international visual artists and architects that was challenged to create a new piece especially for the triennial in the heart of the city. Atelier Bow-Wow started with a common complaint of many Bruges residents about being able to swim in the canals. The result was the Canal Swimmers’ Club, a multifunctional floating platform that also offers spaces for getting together and activities in addition to swimming.

Bio

Atelier Bow-Wow was founded in 1992 by Yoshiharu Tsukamoto (1965, Kanagawa, Japan) and Momoyo Kaijima (1969, Tokyo, Japan). It studies the complex, often brutal logic of urban growth and creates architectural designs and studies that investigate the position of artifice and randomness within urban public spaces. Its practice is based on the concept of behaviorology, the study of functional relationships between ‘behaviour’ and the variables that determine the environment. Atelier Bow-Wow positions projects within an ecosystem of behaviours that contribute to the spatial whole. It takes into account the interface of users, the built environment and natural elements. This creates architecture that is unique to a specific place.
