Rare earth elements wind up in any number of products, like mobile phones, laptops, wind turbines and electric cars. Because these raw materials are becoming ever more scarce, we must find alternatives soon. One of the options is to recycle the earth elements from used devices, which is also known as urban mining. According to Peter Tom Jones, we must also utilise more landfill mining. In this process, materials and energy are recovered by digging up waste in a landfill. Peter Tom Jones is an Ecology civil engineer specialising in industrial ecology.

Peter Tom Jones (1973) is an Ecology civil engineer specialising in industrial ecology, holds a doctorate in Applied Sciences and is employed as a Research Manager (IOF) at KU Leuven. His is one of the 15 Plan C pioneers, which is the Flemish transition arena for sustainable materials management, and of Terra Reversa, the Flemish think tank for ecological economy. As a “committed scientist”, he has published numerous articles, book articles and opinion pieces about themes such as climate, transitions, industrial ecology and ecological economy.
